Child Therapy

Are You Looking For Help With Your Child’s Challenges?

Are you concerned about your child’s mental health?
Have you been searching for ways to help them with what they’re experiencing?
Do they struggle to engage with peers and family members or with things like managing big
emotions?

Maybe your family has gone through a big transition like moving, family changes, or a substantial loss that your child is having difficulty processing. In turn, you might wonder if therapy can help your child find their inner confidence and resilience to face life’s challenges.

Kid’s Behaviors Reflect What's Going On In Their Minds
Some children respond to life’s stressors, like pressure from school or family, with anger and defiant behavior. If kids find socializing to be a source of struggle, they might avoid situations where they would interact with their peers. They may rely on media or technology for a sense of connection, but this might contribute to their feelings of isolation. Experiencing consistent stress can wreak havoc on your child’s nervous system, causing issues with sleep, GI/stomach distress, as well as aches, pains, and headaches. Their eating habits may have changed, and they might overall seem more tired, irritable, or just not seem like their usual self. Deep down kids want to feel accepted and positive about themselves. Still, it can be hard to grow up and not question such things as why certain subjects at school are difficult for them, how they can fit in with their peer group, how to transition to a new school, or how to simply feel okay with being themselves. Counseling can provide support and connection for children, providing a place where kids can explore their behaviors, thoughts, and feelings to help them move forward and thrive.

It's Common For Kids To Need Some Extra Support

All kids go through difficult transitions in life and could use some extra help. Also, some kids have nervous systems with unique needs for regulation, as well as individualized learning styles, and temperaments.

However, just because a child is having a hard time lately doesn’t mean they will always struggle. Children can greatly benefit from counseling to process things like grief or any trauma they may have experienced. Therapy can help them understand themselves and their situation better, and learn skills that can set them up to flourish on their own.

It can be tough to measure the impact of a child learning healthy communication skills, emotional regulation, and coping techniques with a psychologist while they are young, instead of when they are older, after having potentially gone through more struggles. It’s a lot quicker and easier to support a child’s emotional needs today than it is to help an adult reflect on their emotional wounds from childhood. Part of this is due to the natural plasticity of the child’s brain versus the adult brain.

Children Share What They’re Going Through Differently Than Adults

Often, the act of play will generate moments that can provide key insights into how a child is processing the world around them and themselves within it. Parents can gain a lot from a specialist, including a better understanding of their child’s behavior and how they’re responding to their environment both at home and school. Raising children is a very challenging job! And while many parents try very hard, they could always benefit from support, assistance, and accountability to implement lasting and meaningful changes. Parents often “parent” how they were raised, but children's needs vary and those methods may not be as helpful for their own child’s needs. Adding support to the family through seeing a child counselor creates a new perspective and understanding.

We Can Help Your Child Get Back To Enjoying Childhood

At Core Wellness Living & Family Therapy, we see children as young as five, and up to twelve years old. When we begin, we will get to know your child and build a relationship based on trust and understanding, develop a plan to meet their needs, and work with you to achieve the goals of counseling. Our perspectives on a child’s needs in terms of the therapy process includes:
We understand that your child wants to have fun instead of feeling overwhelmed with a lot of negative thoughts about themselves or the world.
Your child probably just wants to feel like they are living a normal life like any other kid.
They likely want to feel like their voice matters and feel that the adults in their life are listening to them.
Your child might also need help with their friendships or to have support managing peer conflicts.
Play and connection are usually the most powerful ways to determine what's needed and how to move forward in the therapy process. We will share what your child is going through during sessions as needed, and will try to alleviate as much distress as possible for you, their parents. Putting your faith in a therapist for your child’s benefit can feel like a vulnerable experience, and we’re here to support and help you through this big step.

We Provide A Multimodal Therapeutic Approach For Children’s Therapy

There is a lot of overlap with the frameworks we utilize in child therapy, with play therapy providing the overarching method, combined with art therapy, and traditional approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy.
Play therapy is an interactive modality that allows kids to bring whatever is going on in their lives into sessions, including conflicts. A child can connect play to what they’re experiencing and their therapist responds by asking relevant questions that prompt creative thought processes. Children can play out scenarios in counseling that reveal their inner resilience, because while in “play mode” the stakes are low and their defenses are gone.
Our goal during sessions is to maintain a connection with your child so they can access their memories, thoughts, and feelings with ease. At any given moment we might address certain thoughts that seem to impact them in some way with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Or we could use Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to engage with feelings that cause distress, with the goal of building tolerance in a safe, neutral environment where they can try out new ideas and connect with their bravery. No matter what, we will individualize treatment to fit your child’s needs so that we can all focus on their healing.
After some time with a counselor, your child will see that it is possible to have increased self-awareness, a sense of purpose, as well as healthy coping skills for life’s ups and downs. At Core Wellness Living & Family Therapy we want to give your child the opportunity to grow with healthier relationships and friendships while gaining clarity and contentment about their life.

You Might Still Have Questions Or Concerns About Child Therapy…

Prioritizing mental health is not a sign of something being wrong. Working with a counselor is actually a proactive step towards improving self-awareness and preventative care that supports long-term well-being, just like medical checkups for physical health. Kids can absolutely benefit from therapy in a myriad of ways, including gaining awareness of their motives, learning coping skills, and developing healthy communication.

When therapy begins, we will meet with you and your child and complete an initial assessment. Typically, your child will meet one-on-one with their therapist, but this might include some parent-involved sessions as needed as we continue with psychotherapy. However, counseling for your child should be viewed as a confidential environment for them, and we do not need to nor find it necessary to share every detail with you, but we will regularly share details that are relevant to our goals, or if safety concerns are brought up.

Children may experience a combination of discomfort and relief during therapy sessions. As they begin to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences, it can bring up uncomfortable emotions and sometimes tears—and we welcome this as an important human experience! We aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere that puts your child at ease, moves at a pace that works for them, and supports them with tools to move forward and build resilience.
