No one talks about how isolating “Failure to Launch” really is

For many families, young adulthood does not unfold the way they imagined. Instead of moving toward school, work, or independent living, some young adults get stuck. They may spend long hours gaming, avoid responsibilities, or feel overwhelmed by the idea of making decisions about their future. As a parent, you might find yourself wondering what went wrong or how things will ever change.

At Core Wellness Living & Family Therapy, we support you as parents by creating a safe, non-judgmental space where young adults can build confidence, learn practical skills, and take meaningful steps toward independence.

Who Failure To Launch Therapy Can Help

If you’re a parent, it can feel heartbreaking and frustrating to watch your young adult spin their wheels. Maybe they are spending hours gaming, avoiding responsibilities, or sleeping through most of the day to avoid dealing with their anxiety. You’ve tried encouragement, tough love, and everything in between, but nothing seems to stick. You might be wondering if you’re doing too much, not enough, or if things will ever change.

If you’re a young adult, you might feel just as stuck. The idea of moving forward, whether that means finding a job, going back to school, or living on your own, can feel overwhelming. Sometimes it feels easier to avoid decisions altogether than risk failing at them. You may want more independence, but you aren’t sure where to even start.

This is exactly where Failure to Launch Therapy can help. Together, we will focus on the practical skills and emotional support that make moving forward possible. We use practical, evidence-based approaches to help. CBT and DBT give young adults tools to manage tough emotions and unhelpful thoughts. Motivational Interviewing and career coaching help them explore strengths and start to picture a future that feels possible. Family sessions and parent coaching can help you set boundaries that actually work and open the door to more honest conversations at home.

With the right support, families can find a healthier balance, parents can feel calmer and more hopeful, and young adults can take meaningful steps toward independence. Change is possible, and it often begins with just one small step.

Failure to Launch Therapy Can Help You:

It’s tough to know where the line is between helping and doing too much. Failure to Launch Therapy gives you the tools to set boundaries that support growth while still showing your child they are loved and respected.

When every conversation feels like it could turn into conflict, it’s easy to second-guess yourself. Therapy helps you understand what your young adult needs, so you can respond with clarity instead of frustration or guilt.

If your home feels filled with stress, arguments, or avoidance, it can take a toll on everyone. Failure to Launch Therapy provides real strategies to ease conflict, improve communication, and create a calmer environment where your family can breathe again.

Many young adults avoid making decisions because the fear of failure feels too heavy. Failure to Launch Therapy supports them in building confidence, exploring options, and taking small but meaningful steps toward independence.

Watching your young adult struggle can feel heavy and lonely, but you don’t have to carry it by yourself. With the right support, families can begin to breathe again, finding more peace at home and more hope for the future. Independence may feel far away right now, but every small step matters, and with guidance, your young adult can start moving forward toward a life that feels their own.

Struggling to launch isn’t who they are. It’s a moment, not their destiny.

Our Approach

How Failure to Launch Therapy Works

1. We get to know your family.

Whether your young adult wants therapy or you’re reaching out as a parent, we start by listening. We learn what feels stuck, what you’ve tried, and what you hope will change.

Every family is different. For young adults, we may focus on confidence, motivation, or direction. For parents, it often means setting boundaries that support independence without constant conflict.

As therapy moves forward, we adjust the plan to match your progress. Young adults take steps toward independence while parents gain tools to create more peace and hope at home.

Questions About Failure To Launch Therapy

The most effective way is to set healthy boundaries with your young adult child. Boundaries are different from punishment or reward. Healthy boundaries allow you to say, “This is a house that we all live in, and we all need to thrive. For that to happen, everyone must follow certain rules.” If your young adult chooses to live at home, they also need to respect those rules. This could mean paying rent, working a full-time job, or enrolling in community college and passing their classes. We can help you identify the house rules that make sense for your family and guide you in how to enforce them consistently.

It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to do this successfully. They are an adult, and if they own the computer, you don’t have the legal right to take it away. What you can do is set boundaries around your home. For example, you might say that while you’re okay with them living in your house, their gaming setup needs to be elsewhere.

The truth is, you can’t force motivation. What you can control are the rules and boundaries in your home. Your adult child can either choose to follow those boundaries or move out. Either way, they’ll need to begin taking steps forward in their life.

Many older teens and young adults come to therapy feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, or simply because their parents asked them to. For these clients, therapy often focuses on building self-esteem and self-advocacy. We use motivational interviewing and career coaching techniques to help them explore their strengths and discover a career path they can feel excited about. Often these are bright, capable individuals who struggled in school or who aren’t drawn to the STEM-focused careers that are so common in Silicon Valley. It’s important to help them recognize their value and begin to explore paths that align with their natural gifts.

Boundaries are not punishments or ways to control your young adult. They are structures that create a respectful and supportive environment where independence can grow. Boundaries provide accountability, promote self-reliance, and prevent unhealthy dependency. They also reduce family tension by clarifying roles and expectations.

For example: “You are welcome to live here while working or attending school, but you’re expected to contribute by doing household chores and following agreed-upon curfews.”

Involving your young adult in the process is key. Treating them as an independent person with their own thoughts and feelings helps them practice critical thinking, feel heard, and build respect.

For example: “Let’s sit down together and talk about what kind of job you’re interested in and set a timeline that feels doable for you. What steps do you think you can take this week to get started?”

When boundaries are set calmly and respectfully, they model healthy communication and strengthen connection rather than harm it.
